A black day for the low paid...
The minimum wage goes up to £7.20 today, on its upward path to £9, where it will be the highest in the world.

The OBR thinks 60,000 low paid workers will lose their jobs as employers on wafer thin margins shrink their headcount to accommodate the increase. Other estimates - like the one from Brunel University - put the figure as high as 300,000.

Unlike the steel workers these low paid workers have no public outcry to support them. Like children, the Left and its supporters in the trade union and public sector see only one side of the coin and refuse to contemplate the very real and disastrous consequences for unskilled employees.

The hike in the minimum wage will also accelerate investment in machines and automation to replace people. You can see this already at your local supermarket, where self serve check out through a machine has become the norm.

This is a stupid, misguided and cruel piece of grandstanding by Osborne. He thinks he's so clever outflanking Labour on the Left. He hasn't stopped to consider how many people he has condemned to a life of sitting at home on benefits of £10 a day watching daytime TV and wasting their lives away.

Shameful.

Fuck starting ANY business in the UK at the moment, let alone employing people. Far too many rules & regulations - when I had a company before I left in 1997, everyone was happy, knew what they were worth, what they got in their pay packet and what they were earning me & the company.

Nobody has any issues work & pay wise and all the legalities were covered but the government - both local & national - just had to keep sticking their nose in and stealing my wealth creating time.

Never again.

"...However, the money that is lost to benefit fraud & scroungers, is nothing compared to the tax dodging corporations, super rich individuals with their offshore accounts or the self employed people not declaring all that they earn. For some strange reason though, your right wing media outlets are not so quick to comment about this.

The right wing establishment have no intention of completely doing away with benefits cheats & scroungers. Think about it, if they did, we would only have the tax dodgers I mention above to have a go at.

I also have the feeling that middle class/working class tories, deep down in a strange, perverse, kind of way, wouldn't like to see the back of the underclasses. I think that secretly they get off on being able to look down their noses at someone.."

That mate is a pathetic fucked up view of the world.

Australia is an anomaly - it side stepped the last recession because it's economy benefitted from continued trading with China, still hoovering up vast mineral deposits from anywhere they could. That has all changed and there are now parts of Australia where property prices have collapsed and unemployment is surging

I do believe, that the benefit system, was originally set up with the best of intentions. Unfortunately, the system has been abused by certain members of society - as rightly highlighted by the right wing media.

However, the money that is lost to benefit fraud & scroungers, is nothing compared to the tax dodging corporations, super rich individuals with their offshore accounts or the self employed people not declaring all that they earn. If only we could see some of the wealth at the top make it's way down to the bottom....I know, pigs might fly & all that. We could use the money to give a more than decent minimum wage to everyone& invest in education so that the underclasses can pull themselves out of the cycle they've been allowed to fall into......

And before anyone says " you'll never get them to work" or "be able to educate them". Remember where you come from. I'm sure most of you, like me, come from an East End working class background. There would of been some not so nice or well to do relatives down the line, but we have still managed to become reasonable human beings...

ahem,..most of the time ;-)

The middle class, Infidel?

Australia has the largest middle class in the world at 66% of the population. The UK's middle class makes up 55% of the population.

Australia also has the highest minimum wage in the world.

The problem with the long term scrounges is that there are areas in this country where three generations haven't done an honest days graft in their lives.
They have no idea of any work ethic and are unemployable as a result.
I for one wouldn't have the patience to know where to begin to change them.
The are a drain on society.
Some are not completely stupid and are fully aware of how to play the system and refuse to take any responsibility for their bone idle offspring.

Re: A black day for the low paid...
What does the evidence suggest happens when a minimum wage is introduced/increased? I know that low earners spent a far greater proportion of their earnings than middle/high earners, so there is an argument that an increased minimum wage means greater stimulus for the economy.

It seems to me that the minimum wage is a plaster that is required because successive governments have created such poor emoyment conditions for the lower paid that we have a situation now whereby companies are able to get their employment costs subsidised by the state.

It's a fantastic time to be a large corporation in the UK. The government has encouraged a colossal supply of low-skilled labour through phenomenal levels of migration. This has driven wages and conditions down. To compensate for the artifially low wages, the government uses taxes to subsidise low income. If you're a corporation with great lawyers, you don't even have to contribute much to this tax because your burden id so low.

The minimum wage is the sticking plaster.

What a good government would do is look after the interests of its people and not flood the market with cheap labour, legislate to ensure corporations didn't have an unfair tax advantage compared to small and mid-size companies, and then step back and watch wages increase.

On the downside though, they would have to pay more to get their gardens done and their carpets hoovered so I don't expect it to happen any time soon.

clyde

The right?

If you think Cameron's government is right wing then you need your head examined.

We have a left of centre government committed to punitive taxes, huge deficits, increases in public spending and a nanny state that intervenes in every aspect of our lives.

It is actually more left wing than New Labour ever was.
